Impaired Driving

Intoxicated boat drivers cause more than one-third of all boating accidents. The US Coast Guard reported in 2008 that alcohol use was the leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents and listed it as the leading factor in 17 percent of fatalities. Unfortunately, some boat operators believe it is less dangerous to drink and operate a boat than a car. This assumption is wrong, high speeds, lack of protection and the water make boating accidents more hazardous than many accidents on land.

Effects of alcohol are magnified while on water, so intoxicated boaters are more than ten times as likely to be killed in a boating accident because of lessened coordination, impaired decision making, dehydration, and susceptibility to hypothermia.
Indiana law defines intoxication as having a blood alcohol level of .08 percent or greater, or being under the influence of alcohol/drugs such that a person’s thoughts and actions are impaired. Just like driving a car, it is illegal to operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

At Tabor Law, we sincerely wish that all drivers would take drinking and driving seriously.
